Oz the Great and Powerful Synopsis: Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well. When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great wizard-and just maybe into a better man as well. -- (C) Walt Disney

Review For Oz the Great and Powerful

An imaginative mix of live-action and CGI that pays homage to the iconic images and timeless sense of wonder in the classic The Wizard of Oz without being too deferential.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

Oz the Great and Powerful is entirely serviceable family entertainment. Problem is, serviceable doesn't quite cut it when you're talking about the magical land of Oz.
Randy Myers-San Jose Mercury News

Aside from a trio of witches that can hold its own with Eastwick's in the dishiness department, Oz the Great and Powerful is a peculiarly joyless occasion.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

Let us take a moment to praise two great and surprisingly powerful characters: a winged monkey and a wee girl made out of china. Because so much human wonder resides in these two creations of make-up, puppetry, digital effects and lovely performances.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

The new Oz falls short of the 1939 Oz in charm and innocence, and certainly in songs. But as family entertainment, it's hard to fault such a rapturous spectacle and astute, suspenseful piece of storytelling.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

Oz the Great and Powerful somehow manages to be both slavish to its hallowed template (when convenient) and completely tone-deaf to the magic that made it a one-of-a-kind cultural milestone.
Chris Vognar-Dallas Morning News

...Oz the Great and Powerful fares somewhat better than most similarly-themed, geared-at-kids big-budget fare.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

It strays so far from the whimsy and joy of the original that you forget the two films are even part of the same universe.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

A poorly written film with a vibrant palette that cannot hide the wickedness in its soul.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

I may sound like I'm tripping in a field of poppies, but the secret to this film's success seems to be James Franco.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

This eye-filling fantasy is an entertaining riff on how the Wizard of that immortal film found his way to Oz.
Leonard Maltin-indieWIRE

Thick with director Sam Raimi's gonzo flourishes, but thin on character.
John Serba-MLive.com

For a movie that looks gorgeous, evokes memories of a cinematic classic and boasts a bundle of star power, Oz the Great and Powerful is oddly flat.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

The funny, warm-hearted "Wizard of Oz" prequel "Oz the Great and Powerful" veers far enough from the Yellow Brick Road paved by the original film to avoid dangerous direct comparisons.
Carla Meyer-Sacramento Bee

It pushes its gospel of modern "magic" - one third science, one third show biz, one third motivational speech - with Disney Channel earnestness.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

Raimi's 'Oz' is nothing more than a grand theft of a 74-year-old vision, thinly veiled in over-saturated colors and populated with action-figure friendly characters sure to set the Mouse's cash registers ringing.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

True...the odds were stacked against Raimi in his film that has some moments but hardly seems momentous.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

big and splashy but tin-eared
Chris Barsanti-Film Racket

Looking backwards in more ways than one.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

Stunning visuals, some suprising plot twists, dreadfully mediocre dialogue delivered by a woefully miscast James Franco.
Marc Fennell-Triple J

Sam Raimi has managed to recapture the feel and charm of the original 'Wizard of Oz'... and that may be the greatest compliment of all.
Kevin A. Ranson-MovieCrypt.com

The script is the real problem, lacking in humor and wit (not to mention jaunty musical numbers) and emphasizing the type of sensory overload that seems to pass for family entertainment these days.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Raimi tries to go all in, but the update can't match the character of the original
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

There were things that offered promise... but one after the other, they blended into the blandness of the storytelling.
David Poland-Movie City News

That the female roles are the most memorable is intriguing since Oz the Great and Powerful is arguably at heart a broadside against male chauvinism
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

It took courage to believe anything could and should be added to The Wizard of Oz. It took brains to create such a sumptuous fantasia with pixels and keyboard swipes. Now, if it only had a heart.

Movie Title : Eden
Genre Movie :Drama
Mpaa Rating : R
Release Date : Mar 20, 2013 Limited
Actors :Jamie Chung,Matt O'Leary,Beau Bridges,Jeanine Monterozza,Scott Mechlowicz,Tantoo Cardinal,Eddie Martinez,Joseph Steven Yang,Naama Kates,Laura Kai Chen,Mariana Klaveno,Jeanine Monterroza,Tracey Fairaway,Russell Hodgkinson,Tony Doupe

Eden Synopsis: Jamie Chung stars in a searing contemporary drama, based on the true story of a Korean-American teenager who is kidnapped from a bar in New Mexico and transformed into a sex slave in Las Vegas by a band of ruthless international thugs. Beau Bridges plays an avuncular federal marshal, a good ol' boy, who turns out to be one of the operation's masterminds while Matt O'Leary is equally repellent as the boss's wildly erratic, drug-addled right-hand man. But it's Chung who breathes life into a story that could have been reduced to violent, even pornographic sensationalism, if not told so compassionately from the victim's point of view. Human trafficking is a $32 billion-a-year business, perpetrated throughout the world. EDEN gives a thoughtful, albeit mind-boggling perspective on how these crimes are sometimes committed in America within plain sight.

Review For Eden

Cruelty, bloodletting and death are evident throughout (frequently occurring just outside the frame), and Griffith's laudable discretion actually intensifies their impact.
Jeff Shannon-Seattle Times

Griffiths lays bare a many-tentacled trafficking system sickening in its reach.
Robert Abele-Los Angeles Times

A quite moving performance comes from Jamie Chung as Eden, repulsion sliding into fearful acceptance without the extinction of hope.
Stanley Kauffmann-The New Republic

Nearly every second is taken up with the horrors inflicted upon the heroine by the sorriest bunch of good ol' boy sadists since "Deliverance."
Farran Smith Nehme-New York Post

A few moments harp on the sentimental, but overall, this is a powerful addition to the small collection of films dedicated to spreading awareness of this horrific crime.
Stephanie Carrie-Village Voice

[An] excruciating vision of under-age women conscripted into sexual slavery by a criminal enterprise from which there is seemingly no escape.
Stephen Holden-New York Times

Tackles the issue of sex slavery, but does so in a way that never feels too clumsy or overarching. Instead, it's a character study with thriller elements; it exposes you to a horrible underworld without ever beating you over the head with it.
Drew Taylor-The Playlist

The intimate scenes between marginalized individuals feeling out complicated relationships. . .gives unusually poignant insight into those caught up in sex trafficking.
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

Tackling the most lurid of subjects, this schlocky shocker proves that sometimes female directors can be as exploitative as men.
David Noh-Film Journal International

Griffiths and her screenwriter, Rick Phillips Jr., manage the tricky business of evoking the specific horrors of sex slavery without languishing in the lurid and graphic.
Scott Tobias-AV Club

There should be more to chew on with a story as horrific as this, yet writer/director Megan Griffiths isn't interested in the crucial details of decay, robbing the film of necessary motivations and a lasting welt of reality.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

A compelling indie film inspired by a true story about a New Mexico woman who is kidnapped and forced into prostitution in a sex trade operation.
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

Brave, gritty, complex and suspenseful. Jamie Chung gives the best performance of her career.
Avi Offer-NYC Movie Guru

The "male gaze" that often despicably and hypocritically surfaces in these kinds of films is pointedly absent throughout.
Chuck Bowen-Slant Magazine

As a vehicle for the talented Leandra Leal - who plays a pregnant young woman who is seduced and manipulated by an evangelical preacher - it is an impressive affair.
Mark Adams-Screen International

Review For Finding Joy

Feels secondhand and contrived.
Dennis Harvey-Variety

Whether stuffing its graceless hero into a clown suit on a construction site or sending him on a first date with an offbeat neighbor to give a safe-sex talk at a home for the elderly, the film is funny only on paper, if that.
Nicolas Rapold-New York Times

Anything heartbreaking or somber is touched upon with the barest of brushes or converted into a comic Band-Aid, leaving you stuck on the cusp of the last stage of grief.

Review For Welcome To Pine Hill

Mixes real-life situations and characters with fictionalized narrative threads to create a highly authentic slice-of-life drama.
-Los Angeles Times

At times the improvised dialogue seems too schematic and superfluous, especially in view of such exploratory and observant handheld camera work. Otherwise, though, this is wonderful stuff.
Jonathan Kiefer-Village Voice

A tender cinema verite take on one man's quest for spiritual redemption.
Michael Rechtshaffen-Hollywood Reporter

Writer-director Keith Miller's existential tone and Harper's gentle approach and giant soul turn this New York story with a final twist into something special.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

[It] relies on understatement and indirection to arrive at a powerful and resonant meaning.
A.O. Scott-New York Times

Welcome to Pine Hill precariously navigates the line between representing the perspective of a black male and projecting a white man's guilt onto it.
Eric Hynes-Time Out New York

An intimate and existential character study of a man out of place with his past, himself, and his surroundings...it never quite coalesces as deeply as it hopes to, but this spiritual tale of redemption resonates.
Rodrigo Perez-The Playlist

Keith Miller doesn't always trust the fluency of his visual language, occasionally forcing a point that's already being captured.

Fruitvale Station Synopsis: Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the Audience Award for U.S. dramatic film at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, director Ryan Coogler's FRUITVALE STATION follows the true story of Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan), a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who wakes up on the morning of December 31, 2008 and feels something in the air. Not sure what it is, he takes it as a sign to get a head start on his resolutions: being a better son to his mother (Octavia Spencer), whose birthday falls on New Year's Eve, being a better partner to his girlfriend Sophina (Melonie Diaz), who he hasn't been completely honest with as of late, and being a better father to Tatiana (Ariana Neal), their beautiful four year-old daughter. Crossing paths with friends, family, and strangers, Oscar starts out well, but as the day goes on, he realizes that change is not going to come easily. His resolve takes a tragic turn, however, when BART officers shoot him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year's Day. Oscar's life and tragic death would shake the Bay Area - and the entire nation - to its very core. (c) Weinstein

Review For Fruitvale Station

Even if every word of Coogler's account of the last day in Grant's life held up under close scrutiny, the film would still ring false in its relentlessly positive portrayal of its subject.
Geoff Berkshire-Variety

A shrewd script and career-launching performances drive a tragic modern story that carries heavy social weight.
Todd McCarthy-Hollywood Reporter

If you aren't choked up at the end, you may have some kind of problem.
Jordan Hoffman-ScreenCrush

An exceptional dramatic feature propelled by strong performances across the board.
Shaun Munro-Film School Rejects

Fruitvale Station, is impressive for a debut, and displays the unimpeachable intent to involve us all in the human story behind a headline. And it certainly displays great promise from its director and accomplished performances from its cast.
Jessica Kiang-The Playlist

One has the sense of a man being slowly, surely written back into being.
Xan Brooks-Guardian [UK]

Michael Jordan's Grant is remarkably sympathetic, and his story develops in a way that adds an awful note to the opening scene, as the arc creeps slowly and painfully towards the final, fatal moment.
Simon Gallagher-What Culture

With a sympathetic and not too heavy hand, Fruitvale Station takes its audience through the constant challenges to black family life - poverty, debt, crime, and the prospect that an encounter with the police can have deadly consequences.
David D'Arcy-Screen International

A viewer may have a heavy heart in wondering precisely just what was fact and what was fiction but there is little doubt at how emotionally effective Coogler's version of the story actually is.
Erik Childress-Film Threat

If you leave the film with dry eyes, you're a hell of a lot stronger than me, or than anyone in the Eccles theater the night I saw the film.

Review For The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia

The rotting corpses, projectile insect vomit, and creepy geezers in black arrive pretty much on cue, as does the great Cicely Tyson as the obligatory old blind woman who "sees" more than most people with two good eyes.
Scott Foundas-Village Voice

Ultimately nothing more than a decrepit vehicle for the moldiest of scary-movie clichés: screechy specters, inane character behavior and jump scares that a toddler could anticipate minutes ahead of time.
Nick Schager-Time Out New York

Some decent scares are provided in this refreshingly low-key ghost story.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

This sequel in name only is a superior pic in almost every possible way, and deserves better than the half-hearted dump -- limited theatrical exposure day-and-date with VOD release -- it's been given by Lionsgate.
Joe Leydon-Variety

Well-worn hokum.
William Goss-Film.com

The filmmakers trot out slavery as a general sins-of-the-past signifier and then have no idea what to really do with such a painful real-world issue.
Mark Olsen-Los Angeles Times

Much like Toni Morrison's acclaimed novel Beloved, this horror film explores the legacy of slavery and -- just kidding.
Dave White-Movies.com

The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia is a good time killer and perfect for a rainy day inside
Steve "Uncle Creepy" Barton-Dread Central

The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia is just as tired a haunting film as its predecessor, failing to signify itself as a uniquely entertaining horror experience.
Matt Donato-We Got This Covered

I'm not sure why the producers even bothered to dramatize the story if they weren't going to keep tight on the details, but I suppose there are greater mysteries in play here. Top of that list: What happened to Connecticut?
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

Credibly acted and hardly much worse than the original, but just as bereft of atmosphere and by-the-numbers.
Shaun Munro-What Culture

Besides having one of the worst titles in recent memory, this formulaic horror flick doesn't have much originality to boot.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

An hour of miscellaneous visions that will make more sense once Act II lurches to a close and we finally get to the good stuff.
