Review For Fill the Void

Burshtein creates a one-of-a-kind portrait that nonetheless transcends its setting, and even its worldview; the dynamics are global.
John Anderson-Newsday

Burshtein has achieved a gripping film without victims or villains, an ambiguous tragedy drawing on universal themes of love and loss, self-sacrifice and self-preservation.
Peter Keough-Boston Globe

[Burshtein] vividly depicts a clannish culture that is likely to feel foreign and perhaps off-putting to generations that came of age in a progressive post-feminist era.
Susan Wloszczyna-Chicago Sun-Times

[Burshtein's] subject is a woman's right to choose her spouse, and what a weighty, giddy, confusing, clarifying and, ultimately, sacred choice that is.
Carrie Rickey-Philadelphia Inquirer

There's a clotted and cramped feeling to "Fill the Void" that's downright creepy.
Tom Long-Detroit News

A sympathetic, layered portrayal, rich with detail, that earns its more complex and resonant conclusion.
Nell Minow-Chicago Sun-Times

A fascinating, and somewhat frustrating peek into the lives of Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jews, their mating rituals and whatnot.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Like suffocating beneath a thick layer of protective plastic, Fill the Void feels like slow death.
Katherine Monk-Canada.com

"Fill the Void" is a fairly somber affair, its dourness only interrupted occasionally by moments of beauty or grace.
Marc Mohan-Oregonian

The film is undeniably a celebration of community, but on Shira, one gets the disturbing whiff of Stockholm Syndrome.
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

Director Rama Burshtein's debut is nothing less than astonishing. She's a card-carrying member of Israel's Hared community and, with that experience, has crafted a work of moral complexity and visual artistry
Chris Chang-Film Comment Magazine

I suspect Burshtein achieved what she set out to do with "Fill the Void," but I found it repetitive and frustrating.
Chris Hewitt (St. Paul)-St. Paul Pioneer Press

Articulates this society's constant urgency and claustrophobic decisions.
Matt Pais-RedEye

Will they or won't they? Burshtein draws out emotional communication by secular actors, setting them amidst extras from the Orthodox community for convincing mise en scène.
Nora Lee Mandel-Film-Forward.com

an exquisite, poetic film that is full of both the joy of life, even in grief, and in the fact that life inevitably goes on
Andrea Chase-Killer Movie Reviews

To fill the void, means to simultaneously gain and lose. For Shira, she is keeping her family together at the cost of her own ambitions. It's a kind of self-sacrifice not seen in American films. Burshtein captures these delicate moments brilliantly.
Monica Castillo-Paste Magazine

Review For The Guilt Trip

Andrew [Rogen], who has invented an organic cleaning compound, pitches it to retailers in a succession of meetings across the country that have no grounding in any known reality.
Joe Morgenstern-Wall Street Journal

The Guilt Trip pairs Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand in the hope, no doubt, that sparks will fly. They don't.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

Rogen and Streisand are reasonably funny together, though Rogen, always best when he's angry, is crowded into the role of a well-mannered straight man.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

To its detriment, The Guilt Trip opts to work gently on the heart rather than hard on the funny bone.
James Adams-Globe and Mail

A breezy, funny and warm road-trip comedy.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

The Guilt Trip is clearly targeted at older audiences less than receptive to the crude jokes that made Seth Rogen famous.
Connie Ogle-Miami Herald

Rogen's deadpan misery meshes well with Streisand's oblivious idiocy, making the laughs roll in.
Phil Villarreal-COEDMagazine.com

On paper, it must have seemed like a solid idea
Bill Gibron-Film Racket

Contrived and mostly medicore, but may satisfy Streisand fans
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

It's all kvetch this and kvetch that, with few jokes or amusing encounters ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

It never quite delivers juggernaut-sized laughs, but the sharp-tongued sparring between the two leads pops and fizzes throughout, with Streisand in particular showing she's still an intuitive and naturalistic comedian.
Terry Staunton-Radio Times

Streisand has lost little of her gawky, pesky touch in comedy, while Rogen knows just how to be the charmingly daft slob.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

Rogen plays the science nerd Andrew, who has just invented an organic cleaning product and is taking a cross-country trip to find a buyer. In a moment of weakness, he invites his meddling mother Joyce (Streisand).
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Barbra's speed-yapping makes her mollycoddling mum Joyce even more annoying than she is supposed to be.
Grant Rollings-Sun Online

What we're left with is a bafflingly dull road movie. Maybe Alexander Payne could have done something with this.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

It is the makers who should feel guilty.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Enjoyable mother-son road movie that swerves the potential potholes of broad or outrageous comedy in favour of an engaging, emotionally convincing and ultimately moving portrait of the central relationship ...
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

It's been more than fifteen years since Barbra Streisand has taken a lead role in a movie...and after suffering this you can see why.
Tim Evans-Sky Movies

There are OK performances but the cast are better than this. Very occasionally it's vaguely amusing, but it's mostly just annoying or cringeworthy.
Roz Laws-Birmingham Post

Think of it as a Sunday drive, easy and breezy, with good company to pass the time.
Stella Papamichael-Digital Spy

Despite the odds, both stars strike a few sparks in Anne Fletcher's slight comedy.
Eddie Harrison-The List

You've seen this film already. That's how predictable it is...the film is surprisingly light on laughs.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Small stakes and consistently tame inclinations mark screenwriter Dan Fogelman's effort, which gives off an ambling vibe that would be more at home in an independent production.
Brent Simon-Screendaily

Only comes to life during a Texan steak-eating contest that has Babs ingest a mountain of meat.
Neil Smith-Total Film

Some actors you'd pay to watch read the phonebook; turns out it's worth paying to see Streisand eat a steak.
Alice Tynan-The Vine

Likeable and entertaining, The Guilt Trip isn't quite the blast it could have been, but it uses the tools of commercial filmmaking to give audiences a lift at the end
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Review For Upstream Color

A cerebral, mournful mystery that resonates like a tuning fork struck on a far-off star.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

It presents us with a glimpse of the vastness of existence, of our inner nature, and of nature without that is as equally dreadful, enveloping, and terrifying as it is beautiful.
Tirdad Derakhshani-Philadelphia Inquirer

"Upstream Color" is splendid, transcendent weirdness.
Tom Long-Detroit News

I loved it.
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

Sci-fi might have been too familiar a word, for what may induce a kind of hallucinatory melancholy in its viewers.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

Elliptical and utterly fascinating adventure in cinema, one that defies simple explanations, but worms its way into the brain.
John Anderson-Newsday

Ultimately, Carruth's tale expresses that, despite the complexity and mutability of human beings, their essence persists.
Violet Lucca-Film Comment Magazine

Much like the worm that's forced into Kris's body, you can't wriggle free from this film and it won't stop growing inside you as time goes by.
Ben Rawson-Jones-Digital Spy

Gorgeous, transcendent and affecting, just watch it and argue the toss later.
Chris Fyvie-The Skinny

A lush, deeply felt, very modern exploration of the need to find genuine connections in a cruel and (very) unusual world.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

It will leave you giddily befuddled. I've never been so swept away by being so lost.
Will Leitch-Deadspin

For those prepared to go with the abstraction, Upstream Color is a rewarding and mind-blowing experience.
Eddie Harrison-The List

Shane Carruth's Upstream Color might even be better than his previous effort, Primer... [It's] a marvel of sci-fi storytelling.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

Carruth's experimental style has a certain level of artistry, and the film contains enough ambitious ideas to make it worthwhile.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

A sumptuous enigma that's intricately constructed and beautifully shot, a film that would make Terrence Malick blush
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

Carruth's complex and muted thriller is exquisitely made and acted. It's a film that challenges the viewer provoking fine existential questions.
Jonathan W. Hickman-Daily Film Fix

May represent a milestone in modern indie cinema, or at least a steppingstone between the smart microbudget work signified by star Amy Seimetz and the more grandiose aspirations associated with someone like -- dare I invoke the name? -- Stanley Kubrick.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Very few movies actually invite us in, meet us halfway, or offer us something. Upstream Color does that in such a unique, singular way that it's unlike almost any other movie I've ever seen.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

Those who require a beating pulse to set the tempo for jigsaw puzzle moviegoing are hereby warned, as Carruth isn't interested in making things easy. He wants to squeeze your mind, not hold your hand.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

It's not designed to stump or baffle but to beckon you into its wondrously chilly gray world. If it takes a few viewings to unlock (most of) its secrets then lucky you; you spent high-quality time you might have wasted on Pain & Gain.
Dave White-Movies.com

If Shane Carruth's time-traveling debut Primer was about outthinking what you might do in the future, his second movie, Upstream Color, is about deciphering why you feel the way you do right now.
Joe Peeler-Paste Magazine

I have no idea what it was about, and I can't wait to see it again.
Alonso Duralde-What the Flick?!

Jurassic Park Synopsis: Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Review For Jurassic Park

The enthralling man-vs.-nature parable based on the late Michael Crichton's best-selling novel hasn't aged one bit.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

The 3-D process adds not just dimension but depth - a technological extension of cinematographer Gregg Toland's deep-focus innovations in The Grapes of Wrath and Citizen Kane. The change in perspective creates greater intensity.
Richard Corliss-TIME Magazine

I'm a fan of this movie. It is thrilling, and the 3-D treatment is a nice enhancement.
Tom Russo-Boston Globe

This movie doesn't just stand the test of time, it transcends it.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

"Jurassic Park" remains an absolute thrill from a Spielberg in top form: Funny, scary, fast-moving and full of just-right details.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

"Jurassic Park" was impressive in 1993. Twenty years later, it's flawless.
Sean O'Connell-Washington Post

Jurassic Park is a masterpiece!
Steve Neish-HeyUGuys

The 3D doesn't add a lot to the narrative, but it's still an exciting adventure into the mesmerizing world of dinosaurs and humanity's godlike addiction to reviving the past.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Some things have dated - Sam Jackson wouldn't be allowed to smoke in the office; everyone would have mobiles; Google Earth would have kept the island from being kept a secret - but the power of the film's pioneering CGI remain strangely undiminished.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Steven Spielberg's summer adventure is still one of the ultimate movie roller coaster rides.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Combustible Celluloid

Jurassic Park is a how-to guide for structuring a multi-character disaster film.
Matt Neal-The Standard

Still proves as thrilling as ever.
Steve Newall-Flicks.co.nz

A classic gets even better.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

The film is a classic and the chance to see it on the big screen again (or for the first time) should not be missed
Michael A. Smith-MediaMikes

Sentiment is explained by science as the family impulse that motivates so many Steven Spielberg stories is revealed to be an evolutionary imperative in this near-perfect action-adventure.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

[Looks] better not only than effects-driven movies of the same period, but better, frankly, than half of what gets released nowadays.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

Kids who love dinosaurs will love it. And who doesn't?
Cynthia Fuchs-Time to Play Magazine

confirms both Spielberg's mastery of cinematic thrills and the comparatively empty bombast of today's summer tentpole movies, even the better ones.
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

Jurassic Park shows us a director in transition, and the film captures his transformation in its own kind of cinematic amber.
Bilge Ebiri-Vulture

[The] 3D [conversion] provides the definitive version of this classic film. Jurassic Park has been transformed with with artistry, nuance and sophistication, and it's an absolute must-see during this brief run.
Jason Gorber-Twitch

The 3D effects had me nearly jumping out of my seat. Some say Hollywood is converting too many old films to 3D. But, "Jurassic Park" was the perfect choice. There's nothing more fun than sharing a seat with a snapping dinosaur.
Paul Chambers-Movie Chambers

Spielberg treats us as he does his characters, leading us into a strange land and expecting us to make it out with all our faculties intact; it's a tall order, given the heart-stopping, bloodcurdling, limbs-numbing excitement packed into the second hour.
Matt Brunson-Creative Loafing

It is as if time has passed the movie by. "Jurassic Park" remains solid entertainment, but the awe and wonder have faded.
Bob Bloom-Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)

The thrill of seeing live dinosaurs on screen is not as acute today as it was 20 years ago admittedly, but there is still some 3D awe left in the creations that roared 65 billion years ago...
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

The 3D isn't pushed on the audience, but it does reveal the amount of depth that Spielberg actually put into the film 20 years ago.
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

While it's not the most profound of Spielberg's works or the most entertaining from a popcorn perspective, it's one of the most technically flawless movies he's ever produced.
Rob Vaux-Mania.com

Emperor Synopsis: Matthew Fox (WORLD WAR Z, I, ALEX CROSS, "Lost") joins with Academy Award (R) winner Tommy Lee Jones (LINCOLN, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, THE FUGITIVE, HOPE SPRINGS), newcomer Eriko Hatsune and award-winning Japanese star Toshiyuki Nishida (GET UP!, TSURIBAKA NISSHI 14, TSURIBAKA NISSHI 6, GAKKO, DUN-HUANG) to bring to life the American occupation of Japan in the perilous and unpredictable days just after Emperor Hirohito's World War II surrender. As General Douglas MacArthur (Jones) suddenly finds himself the de facto ruler of a foreign nation, he assigns an expert in Japanese culture - and psychological warfare - General Bonner Fellers (Fox), to covertly investigate the looming question hanging over the country: should the Japanese Emperor, worshiped by his people but accused of war crimes, be punished or saved? Caught between the high-wire political intrigue of his urgent mission and his own impassioned search for the mysterious school teacher (Hatsune) who first drew him to Japan, Fellers can be certain only that the tricky subterfuge about to play out will forever change the history of two nations and his heart. Review For Emperor

A stodgy movie that mixes dubious history with a clichéd, Madame Butterfly romance story, set in the period immediately following Japan's surrender in 1945.
Liam Lacey-Globe and Mail

Emperor falls prey to the temptations endemic to historical docudrama: the desire to pack a miniseries' worth of events into one feature-length film, with romance tossed in for added appeal.
Peter Howell-Toronto Star

Half crinoline romance, half crusty military-history lesson.
Peter Debruge-Variety

Just a dull procedural, with the bland Matthew Fox driving around in a jeep and asking questions and not having them answered.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

The epigrams fly, but the movie never really takes off.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

Director Webber and the screenwriters, David Klass and Vera Blasi ... largely [waste] Jones and some very nice period details.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

Emperor seems to have been tailor-made for high school history classes whose teachers like to give themselves a break by popping in a DVD.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

...probably the most disappointing 2013 film I've seen so far.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

... contains some potentially intriguing subject matter compromised by a formulaic approach that renders the periphery characters more compelling than the central ones.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

Director Peter Webber, who found a more elegant balance between history and passion in Girl With a Pearl Earring, has turned Emperor into a stagy and hollow kind of story.
Jay Stone-Canada.com

Emperor missed the opportunity to become an engrossing procedural of historic minutiae, like Lincoln.
Nathalie Atkinson-National Post

This is a movie that tries to be that great war film, as well as a star-crossed romance and a political thriller, without really succeeding on any front.
Tyler Chase-Paste Magazine

If you can't take this movie for history, what may it be taken as? As romance it's not believable. Much of the history is censored, including the rumored "Operation Blacklist" involving the pressure from above to clear the names of the royal family.
Richard von Busack-MetroActive

Offers a labored treatise on the Japanese national character, with endless speeches about honor, devotion, loyalty, and the people's reverence for their emperor as a human deity.
Mike D'Angelo-AV Club

Other than the restrained romantic flashbacks, there's nothing in this movie that hasn't been done better before.
Kelly Vance-East Bay Express

The real criminals are the screenwriters ...
Brett Michel-Boston Phoenix

A decent history lesson--even if one told with a major dose of dramatic license--that's dragged down by a sappy, clumsily played romantic subplot.
Frank Swietek-One Guy's Opinion

Powerful and brilliantly acted. Tommy Lee Jones is remarkable as General Douglas MacArthur in a side of World War II that has remained hidden.
Pete Hammond-Movieline

However turgid the storytelling, "Emperor" makes its historic points about a widely unknown 1945 wartime episode that played out in U.S occupied Japan after its surrender.
Cole Smithey-ColeSmithey.com

It comes off as a fairly boring and on-the-nose experience that only history buffs might find intriguing and/or entertaining. (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)
Jim Judy-Screen It!

A modestly budgeted, respectfully executed post-WWII drama, the film is also entirely edgeless, and aside from a couple of swear words is ready to be shown in classrooms and on the History Channel in endless repeats.
Kevin Jagernauth-The Playlist

The mealy half-truth director Peter Webber...screenwriters Vera Blasi and David Klass settle for just winds up a waste of everyone's time.
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

Emperor, however, is so sophisticated in its ambitions, mature in its narrative, and expert in its execution that the film's failures are more honorable than fatal.
Louis Black-Austin Chronicle
